1983-2005 

9th June 1983:- Bro William (Bill) Parker and his Officers for 1983-1984 were installed by RWBro Herman Miller.

The Brethren and their Ladies met at the Scout Hall prior for a delicious dinner prepared by “Peter’s Catering”.

 RWBro David A Bruce PDDGM No 18 gave the General Charge.

 11th October 1983:- RWBro. George N. Perry, DDGM, made his official visit. Two fifty (50) year Jewels were presented this evening.

 WBro Duncan MacFarquhar gave a short biography on Bro. Ed Tidball, whose life work was a business man and sportsman and now at age 86, is enjoying his retirement. He then presented him with his 50 year Jewel. WBro. Maurice F Downie presented Bro. Herman Roedler with his 50 year jewel. At age 76, Bro Roedler still works on the farm and contributes greatly to the community and Village Council. RWBro George N. Perry presented their Certificates. The DDGM also presented MM Certificates to Bro. Douglas Ramsbottom and Bro. Douglas Wieller, and congratulated the Officers on their work and the progress they have made since 1972. He commented on how the Bursary Fund has increased ($60,000.00 this year) and it must continue to grow to help out the young people who receive those Bursaries. He also reminded the brethren about the “Car Rally” in May 1984 and the Grand Masters theme “Masonry in Action”. 

 12th April 1984:- Bro Vic Ramsbottom donated the Junior and Senior Wardens Aprons.

                                         

14th June 1984:-Bro R Murray Gratz and his Officers for the year 1984-1985 were installed by RWBro Herman Miller.

 WBro J Sargent, Mountain View Lodge No. 16 Olds gave the Closing Charge.

 8th November 1984:- Bro Roger Anderson became a member by affiliation from Wasatch Lodge No. 1 Salt Lake City Utah.

 11th April 1985:- This was “Step-Up” Night. The first order of business was to hold a memorial service for Bro. John Henry Herman Roedler. He was born at Brantford Ontario, 25th August 1907 and became a member of Carstairs Lodge No. 20, 10th July 1930. He was an outstanding Mason and contributor to the community and the Village   Council of Carstairs. He will be sadly missed, passed to The Grand Lodge Above, 31st March 1985. The Lodge approved a motion for the WM to be given a Jewel or Apron. His choice!

 9th May 1985:- Bro Vic Ramsbottom was given the authority to sort out the Past Masters list on our notice by respective years.

 Sunday 9th June 1985:-Brethren and their Ladies attended a picnic and BBQ on the farm of WBro Duncan MacFarquhar. A great time had by all.

                                          

13th June 1985:- Tradition has been broken. From 1971 to date, with the efforts of WBro Metro Gushaty and WBro Jack Hildebrandt, the Lodge has made positive moves, with many brethren affiliating. Bro Vic Ramsbottom is one of those brethren, and having served 20 plus years as member of Lodge Renfrew No 134 Calgary before affiliation, was allowed to invite Masonic friends to assist in his installation. MWBro W.E. (Curley) Foster during WWII was a member of the BRITISH COMMONWEALTH AIR TRAINING PLAN, and came from the UK to enter into Pilot Training at Service Flying Training School, Penhold Alberta, one of many Canadian Air Force Pilot Training bases for NATO pilots until 1965. Bro Foster was a gifted painter and spent much of his free time at the “Works and Buildings” section volunteering his hobby under WOI Vic Ramsbottom.

This association prompted Bro. Vic Ramsbottom to ask MWBro. Foster to place him in the chair of KS, which came to pass. Assisting brethren were MWBro A.O (Tony) Aspeslet, MWBro Robert L Costigan, WBro. John Robert Doherty (Selkirk Lodge No 55, British Columbia & the Yukon, WBro. William A Brown (118) and WBro. Ray H Burton (187). RWBro. Rev Herman Miller, having given yeoman service for 14 consecutive years as Installation Master, stepped down. Seventy-four (74) visitors representing twenty-six (26) Lodges, which included nine (9) Worshipful Masters, were present.

12th October 1985:-. Re: Corner Stone laying at King George Lodge No 59, under the direction of MWBro. Bill Graves, Grand Master.  District WMs were requested to assist, which included Carstairs Lodge No 20.

14th November 1985:- RWBro. Alex Richardson, DDGM, made his official visit. His message was “The Extended Hands”. As most of the members were from areas other than Carstairs, a By-Law change was made to Sec 3 changing the time of tyling to 7:30PM instead of the former 8:00PM.

12th December 1985:-Another successful Christmas Dinner was held prior to the meeting honoring our “Special Ladies” and Ladies. Bro Stan Pearson was accepted as an affiliated member from Spitzie Lodge No 6.

13th March 1986:-Irish Night! A York Rite degree team under the direction of WBro. John Pelletier (176) opened a York Rite Lodge, collected the word and gave an excellent paper on York Rite Masonry, followed by comments from RWBro. Norman Senn (176), DDGM. This was the start of many productive evenings to follow over the years between Mosaic Lodge No 176 and Carstairs No 20. All those present joined in at the “Festive Board” where the JW, Bro Howard Langdon and his Stewards, presented their “Irish Stew”. Fifty-three Brethren had signed the register.

10th April 1986:-This was a memorable evening as the Lodge celebrated its 80th year. WBro. Hugh Wilson gave the overview.

08th May 1986:-This was a very special night as Worshipful Masters, from twenty-one (21) lodges gathered from five (5) districts to confer a First Degree on Mr.  Blaine Robert Gushaty, who was conducted by his brother, WBro. Brian Gushaty (146) while his father WBro. Metro Gushaty (20) sat as IPM. There were sixty (60) plus visiting brethren present (including USA) representing twenty-five (25) Lodges. one (1) PGM, six (6) PDDGM’s and the DDGM District No. 18, RWBro. Alex Richardson.

                                              

20th June 1986:-This was a very special installation as RWBro Rev Herman Miller who was an affiliated PM and never sat in the East in Carstairs Lodge No 20. Prior to the installation, RWBro. Clarence Kraft DDGM District No. 18, along with a goodly number enjoyed a very nice meal with our “Special Ladies”, Ladies and visitors. WBro Vic Ramsbottom installed RWBro. Rev Herman Miller in the chair of KS, after which we joined our Widows and Ladies for Strawberry Short Cake and Ice Cream.

 19th July 1986:-The Lodge supported Carstairs “Beef and Barley Days” parade after which we all journeyed to WBro. Don Odell’s farm for a picnic and BBQ.

 11th September 1986:- RWBro. Clarence Kraft, DDGM, made his official visit. This was a very special night as WBro. Metro Gushaty would be raising his son, Bro. Blaine, who would be conducted by his brother WBro. Dr. Brian Gushaty. RWBro. Clarence Kraft brought the greetings of Grand Lodge, congratulated the Officers on their good work and left us with a short but instructional message.

 9th October 1986:-Bro. Blaine Gushaty proved up in the Third Degree. WBro. Gordon Smith then conferred the First Degree on Mr. Richard Patterson. WBro. Vic Ramsbottom was able to get twenty-eight (28) Theatre Seats from a church that was being renovated in Calgary, at a cost of $425.00. The lodge approved same and it was suggested that each member contribute $ 15.00, to assist the financial burden on the lodge. After a short discussion, the brethren agreed to Bro Vic’s proposal. WBro Max Malden, Renfrew Lodge No 134, made a beautiful plaque with each contributor’s name engraved thereon.

 13th November 1986:- WBro. Jack Hildebrandt conferred the Second Degree on Bro Richard Patterson.

 11th December 1986:-This was our annual Christmas dinner for the Widows and Ladies. WBro. Sandy Sanderson entertained the Ladies  by presenting “Sign Language”- a means of communicating with the deaf. The Lodge approved an increase of Five ($ 5.00) for annual dues ($ 30.00) with the Paid up Life Membership Plan going to Three Hundred and Fifty ($ 350.00).

 8th January 1987:- WBro. Peter Halkett was invited to the East to confer the Third Degree on Bro Richard Patterson.

12th February 1987:- A/WM WBro. Hugh Wilson received the Grand Master MWBro. Norman Oslund. Bro. Patterson proved as a Master Mason. Bro Howard Langdon SW, presented the Grand Master with an Olympic Pin he had made. The Grand Master thanked the Lodge for allowing his Bible to be placed on the alter this evening. WBro. Vic Ramsbottom presented a plaque to the GM, who received it on behalf of the Lodge, bearing the names of twenty-eight (28) brethren who had donated $ 15.00 to cover the cost of the Theatre Chairs.

There were thirty-five (35) visitors this evening representing fourteen (14) Lodges.

 12th March 1987:- Another great night for visitors-Officers gathered from sixteen (16) Lodges representing four (4) Districts to assist the A/WM, WBro Vic Ramsbottom to confer the First Degree on Mr. Robert Huntley. (Each officers participating held the same office in his own Lodge) Bro. Dave Langdon (123) JD, conducted the candidate. The DDGM reported that there were fifty-six (56) visitors signed in representing twenty-two-(22) Lodges. WBro Duncan MacFarquhar, assisted by the DDGM, presented twenty-five (25) year pins to WBro. Vic Ramsbottom, WBro. Peter Halkett, WBro. Sandy Sanderson, Bro Stan Pearson and Bro Howard Langdon. All had affiliated with Carstairs Lodge from their mother Lodge.

 9th April 1987:- “Step-Up” Night -The Officers conferred the second degree on Bro. Robert Huntley. The JW invited all Brethren and their Ladies to his home on 30th May 1987 for a BBQ. A memorial was held for WBro. Maurice Frank Downie. Born in Carstairs and received his schooling at Carstairs and Garbutts Business College. He was an employee of United Grain Growers for thirty-four (34) years. He became a member of Carstairs Lodge No. 20, 12th October 1944. Was WM in 1960, secretary from 1961-1972. Had received his twelve (12) year Secretaries Jewel in 1975 and Life Membership in 1981. He passed to the Grand Lodge Above, 16th March 1987.

 14th May 1987:- WBro. Jack Hildebrandt made a case for the DDGM Cuffs of RWBro G Van Haaften. They had been presented to the Lodge by his good Lady. WBro Duncan MacFarquhar stated he was a very dedicated Mason, neighbour and community supporter. During the winter, he would drive with his team and cutter 20 miles to lodge.  WBro. Sandy Sanderson conferred the Third Degree on Bro Robert Huntley.

Prior to the installation, a delicious dinner, prepared by the Ladies of the Canadian Legion was enjoyed by our “Special Ladies”, Ladies and brethren. The brethren joined the Ladies after the installation for coffee and desert.

12th November 1987:-Another special night for visitors. WBro Howard Langdon had a “Teachers Degree Team” night. The visiting DDGM, RWBro. Lew King was IPM. The candidate was Mr. Robert Watterberg, a teacher.

14th January 1988:- Past Masters Night. WBro. Metro Gushaty sat in the East and conferred the Third Degree on Bro Robert Watterberg assisted by the Past Masters.

11th Feb 1988:-RWBro. W.C. (Bill) Johnston, DDGM, made his official visit. After closing, WBro. Art Marshall, Innisfail Lodge No 8, gave a slide presentation on the Ancient York Rite.

10th March 1988:- The Officers conferred the First Degree on Mr. Jack Owen, Mr. Glen Sollid and Mr. Bennett.

14th April 1988:- The Officers conferred the Second Degree on Bro’s Owen, Sollid and Bennett. WBro Howard Langdon presented “Carstairs Pins”, which he had designed, to the lodge secretary.

12th May 1988:-“Step-Up” Night. The Officers conferred the Third Degree on Bro Glen Sollid. Due to increased costs, the Lodge approved a motion to increase Initiation Fee to $ 175.00, to include Apron, By-Laws & Constitution, Certificate and Bible.

13th October 1988:- RWBro. John Pelletier, DDGM, made his official visit. Bro. Bennett and Bro. Owen were raised to the Third Degree. The DDGM thanked the WM and his officers for their good work. He also congratulated Bro Owen and Bro Bennett for selecting Carstairs Lodge No 20 and looked forward to seeing them progress to the East.

 8th December 1988:- The Annual Christmas Dinner for our “Special Ladies” and Ladies was held. We were also very pleased to have with us MWBro. David A Bruce Grand Master and Lady Doreen.

 11th January 1989:- We received direction from Grand Lodge of the assessment of Five Dollars ($5.00) over five (5) years for a total of twenty-five Dollars ($25.00).

The lodge was reminded to make the Masonic Benevolent Fund more solvent, and it was suggested each brother send in five ($5.00) annually.

 11th May 1989:-“Step-Up”Night. As this was RWBro. John Pelletier’s last visit to our lodge, he was received in form. The SW, Bro Jim Stratton, conducted a very efficient business meeting. The DDGM congratulated Bro Stratton on his election and wished him well as Worshipful Master.

                                              

8th June 1989:- Bro James R Stratton and his Officers for 1989-1990 were installed by WBro Vic Ramsbottom.

 The General Charge was given by WBro. Ed Murray (48) DDGM elect. The new SW prepared the  dinner following the installation.

 7th September 1989:- A Memorial was held for WBro. Peter Halkett (Organist). He was born at Twechar Scotland 25th September 1922. Bro Halkett became a member of Kilsyth St. John Lodge No 39, at Kilsyth  Scotland , 11 December 1946. He came to Canada as a qualified policeman to join the Calgary City Police. Bro Halkett affiliated with Crescent Lodge No 87 on 13 June 1950, serving as WM in 1963. On 11th November he demitted and joined Carstairs Lodge No 20 to be their Organist. He passed to the Grand Lodge Above on the 04th September 1989.

Congratulations extended to WBro’s  Metro Gushaty, Doug Ramsbottom and Vic  Ramsbottom for winning the Calgary No 23 Golf Tournament, assisted by Mrs. Flo Ramsbottom (4th member)

 14th September 1989:- WBro Jim Stratton and his officers conferred the First Degree on Mr. Metro Babchuk.

 12th October 1989:- RWBro. Ed Murray, DDGM, made his official visit, accompanied by RWBro. Vic Ramsbottom, Grand Registrar. The Second Degree was conferred on Bro Metro Babchuk. Sec 16 “Fees and Dues” of By-Laws was changed to read “Five times the Annual Dues, ($40.00 present yearly Dues).

 9th November 1989:- The Third Degree was conferred on Bro. Metro Babchuk.

 14th December 1989:- The Lodge approved the move of the “Eastern Star Sign” to Crossfield Masonic Hall entrusted to RWBro. Ed Murray DDGM.

 11th Jan 1990:-The First Degree was conferred on Mr. Robert Hanf.

 01 March 1990:- Rockyford Lodge No 123 conferred the Second Degree on Bro Robert Hanf (20)

 12th April 1990:-Bro. John Hawken was passed to the Second Degree, and Bro. Robert Hanf was raised to the sublime Degree on 5th April 1990 at Rockyford Lodge No 123.

 10th May 1990:- Past Masters Night. A/WM WBro. Metro Gushaty and his team raised Bro. John Hawken as a Master Mason.

                                                   

01 June 1990:- (Friday, by dispensation, allowing the Grand Master to attend) MWBro. Stanley Mottershead, Grand Master, was received in form. Bro Stanley G. B. Pearson and his Officers for 1990-1991 were installed by RWBro. Vic Ramsbottom.

 The General Charge was given by RWBro Ed Murray DDGM District No.18. Present were eleven (11) Grand Lodge Officers, nine (9) PDDGM’s, eight (8) WMs, and there were thirty-one (31) lodges, representing fifty-eight (58) visitors.     

MWBro. Stanley Mottershead brought greetings and best wishes, and congratulated those installed and invested. He gave a very instructive message on our Craft and closed by reminding all about Grand Lodge next week. A banquet followed in the lower Hall supplied by our new WM. MWBro. David A Bruce was the guest speaker and brought a very informative and appreciated message as usual.

 14th July 1990:-Beef and Barley Days Parade was supported by the lodge, after which all journeyed to WBro. Stan Pearson’s farm, for a picnic and BBQ. Our “Special Ladies” and Ladies were present.

 13th September 1990:-The Regular Officers conferred the First Degree on Mr. David Paton. Bro. Roger Anderson presented a set of Masonic Encyclopedia to the Lodge.

11th October 1990:- MWBro. Don Millar, Grand Master, made his official visit. A Memorial was held for two brethren:- Bro. Alfred Creelman Gough, was born at Carstairs Alberta 10th October 1915. He became a member of Carstairs Lodge No 20 on

 23rd April 1946. He passed to the Grand Lodge Above 16th May 1990. Bro. Eldred Edwin Tidball, born Michigan North Dakota USA 03 January 1897. He became a member of Carstairs Lodge No 20 03 May 1928. Bro Tidball passed to the Grand Lodge Above 09th August 1990. MWBro. Millar gave an interesting and challenging talk on Masonry, followed by a delicious dinner at the festive board. Visitors present represented eleven (11) lodges.

 8th November 1990:-Bro. Paton was passed to the Second Degree. WBro. Arnold Smith became a member by affiliation from Maple Leaf Lodge No 9, Grand Registry of Saskatchewan.

 13th December 1990:- The annual Christmas Dinner for our “Special Ladies” and Ladies was held at the Royal Canadian Legion. Bro. John Hawken (magician) entertained the Ladies and their guests while the brethren attended a short business meeting. Desert, coffee and entertainment followed. WBro. Howard Langdon and Bro. Glen Sollid assisted in the entertainment.

 10th January 1991:-A memorial Service was held for WBro. John Malcolm Moore, born 03 January 1916, who passed to the Grand Lodge Above on 11th November 1990. The Past Masters conferred the Third Degree on Bro Paton. RWBro. Vic Ramsbottom was A/WM.

 14th February 1991:- 85th Anniversary night. A Memorial Service was conducted for Stuart Johnston, born 16th September 1915. He became a member of Carstairs   Lodge No 20, 18th May 1944, and passed to the Grand Lodge Above on 16th January 1991. WBro. Stan Pearson presented some very interesting and historical facts about the Masonic Hall.

 14th March 1991:-Bro. Glen Sollid  gave a report on the Masonic Spring Work Shop and the guest speaker, Mr. Alvin Law, who was  born a Thalidomide baby (no arms) but had a very “Positive Attitude”, drove his car, played piano and did TV weather in Regina etc. WBro. Glen  Sollid then presented a “Hand Crafted” case with two Entered Apprentice Aprons enclosed.

 11th April 1991:-Mr John Sawatsky and Mr. Clifford Allan Wallace received their First Degree.

 9th May 1991:-Bro. Clifford Wallace was passed to the Second Degree. WBro. Metro Gushaty, WBro Howard Langdon and Bro. Bob Waterberg were appointed “Liaison Committee” for the new Community Hall of Carstairs, as regards to space for Carstairs Lodge No 20. RWBro Ken Oliver, DDGM, made his official visit. He congratulated the Degree Team on very good work and also Bro. Wallace on selecting Carstairs Lodge.  He then presented an instructive paper on this Degree in Masonry.

                                                    

  31st May   1991:- (Friday) an Emergent meeting was called to install Bro. Jim Stephens and his Officers for 1991-1992. The change was made to accommodate the Grand Master for a Third Degree in June. RWBro Vic Ramsbottom was installing officer.

 VWBro W.W. (Claus) Gewers (134), Grand Pursuivant, presented the Working Tools in the First Degree. RWBro. Clarence Kraft, DDGM, gave the General Charge and brought his final greetings. WBro Jim Stephens congratulated the DDGM for having perfect attendance at Carstairs Lodge No 20.     

 13th June 1991:-The new Grand Master MWBro Calvin Shaver made an official visit. WBro. Jim Stephens and his new Officers conferred the Third Degree on Bro. Wallace. MWBro Shaver brought greetings from the Grand Lodge of Alberta congratulated Bro. Wallace and welcomed him to the fraternity. The GM then favored the Lodge with a “Short” but inspiring and timely message. A delicious banquet followed.

 12th September 1991:- Bro John Sawatsky was to be passed this evening, but was unable to attend. He will receive his Second Degree in Acme Lodge No 60, on 17th October 1991.

 10th October 1991:-Bro Metro Babchuk proved in the Third Degree and his uncle, WBro Metro Gushaty, presented him with his Bible. WBro. Jack Hildebrandt made and presented two new “Dollies” to hold the “Ashlars”. The DDGM, RWBro. W C (Bill) Johnston brought greetings from Grand Lodge and suggested we continue to add photos to our permanent Register.

 10th November 1991:-Joint meeting between Symbol Lodge No 93 and Carstairs Lodge No 20.  WBro. Gratz, (WM) and his Officers were received in form and joined their counter-parts about the Lodge. Bro. Bert Seehawer was made a member by affiliation. RWBro. Vic Ramsbottom conducted a very impressive and Solemn Remembrance Service. Symbol Lodge No. 93 presented a “Traveling Lantern”, to be engraved and taken to another Lodge within the month- A Masonic paper must accompany the presentation. Bro Mossbarger (93) gave an address on the Bible which was well received. The WM stated that the Lodge looked forward to its return journey for the 100th Anniversary in 2006.

 12th December 1991:- Annual “Special Ladies” and Ladies Christmas Dinner was held. RWBro. W C (Bill) Johnston, DDGM presented a 50 year Jewel to a very dedicated mason, WBro. Norman Horning. The Traveling Lantern will go to Concord Lodge No 124 on Saturday 4th January 1992.

 9th January 1992:-WBro Stan Pearson reported on the visit to Concord Lodge No 124 with the “Traveling Candle”. Bro Alex Palin and Bro. Roger Anderson gave very instructive papers on the ritual. It was well received.

 13th February 1992- RWBro W.C. (Bill) Johnston, DDGM, made his Official visit. He brought greetings from the Grand Master and stated the name, “Phoenix”, had been confirmed for District No 18.

 12th March 1992:- After giving a paper on our ritual in the 1920’s, Bro. Roger Anderson was presented with his 25 year pin by WBro. Doug Ramsbottom.

 02 April 1992:- Bro. John Sawatsky was raised to the Third Degree.

26th April 1992:-A   “Special Meeting “ was held on Sunday 26th April 1992 to discuss the pending move to the New Carstairs Community Centre or to another facility.

After much discussion about the new community hall, RWBro. Ed Murray, the Mayor of Crossfield made an invitation to be part of the Crossfield Hall. He also suggested that it would be a nice gesture to bring along the three (3) Principal Officers’ Chairs. It was agreed to move to Crossfield and the necessary committees were put into place.

The following resolution was also passed to be presented to the Lodge for approval:-

 Whereas RWBro. Rev Herman J Miller has been a loyal Freemason since 1944, serving as Grand Lodge Chaplain and DDGM and for over 20years with dedication as Secretary/Treasurer of Carstairs Lodge No 20, he be awarded the Long Service Jewel, and the honorary appellation of “Secretary Emeritus” would also be bestowed upon him.

 14th May 1992:- The lodge was informed that our last meeting in the Lodge Room would be 11th June Installation. All furniture would be moved to the new Carstairs Community Centre before then. All agreed that we should get a dispensation and have the installation at Crossfield Masonic Hall. RWBro. W.C. (Bill) Johnston, DDGM, presented RWBro Herman J Miller with his “Long Service Medal”. WBro. Duncan MacFarquhar then presented RWBro. Miller with a plaque:- “Presented to RWBro. Rev Herman Miller by the Brethren of Carstairs Lodge No 20 A.F.& A.M, in affectionate and respectful recognition for 48  years as a loyal Mason, dedicated service as  DDGM and Grand Chaplain the Grand Lodge of Alberta, and in particular for the constant care as Secretary/Treasurer of Carstairs Lodge No 20 over Twenty (20) years. The brethren of the Lodge with humble gratitude bestow on him the honorary appellation “Secretary /Treasurer Emeritus” May 1992.  The SW, Bro. Glen Sollid presented a set of “Working Tools” he had made for Carstairs Lodge No 20.

                                                

11th June 1992:-First Meeting in Crossfield Masonic Hall- A notice of motion was presented “That in accordance with the Grand Lodge of Alberta, Section 306 to 08.01 that Carstairs Lodge No 20 move its Charter to Crossfield Masonic Hall Crossfield Alberta”. We also brought our (3) CHAIRS (WM-SW-JW). Bro Glen Sollid and his Officers for 1992-1993 were installed by RWBro Vic Ramsbottom.

 The Charge from the N.E. was given by WBro. Sam Slater, Strathmore Lodge No 52. Bro Graham Humphrey (SW) (176) (our blind Brother who is an excellent ritualistic) gave the General Charge.

 10th September 1992:- The Grand Lodge of Alberta approved the move to Crossfield Masonic Hall, Crossfield, Alberta. The newly installed and invested Officers conferred the First Degree on Mr. John Bath.

 08th October 1992:- RWBro. Douglas Sherris, DDGM, made his official visit and was accompanied by the JGW, RWBro Gordon Macauley.

Dispensing with Lodge paraphernalia:- The Didsbury Museum accepted the DDGM Cuffs, along with RWBro Ray Wilbur Wood PDDGM, Apron and 50year Jewel.

( see27th June 1980). WBro. Stan Pearson took the ceiling fans to Cremona Church, as he was the original donor. King Hiram Lodge No 21 received our “Ashlar Dollies” by accident. WBro. Jack Hildebrandt would eventually make a new set for Carstairs/Crossfield Lodge.

 Bro. John Bath was passed to the Second Degree. RWBro. W.C. (Bill) Johnson presented a new brief case to the Secretary/Treasurer, to replace the well used one. Bro. Clifford Wallace proved as a MM and received his Bible from the WM. RWBro. Doug Sherris brought greetings from Grand Lodge and spoke on “Voice Projection”, emphasizing that one should check pronunciation and meaning of difficult words in order to effectively learn one’s ritual and to assist the speaker to place correct emphasis on appropriate sections of the ritual.

 12th November 1992:-RWBro. Vic Ramsbottom conducted the annual solemn Remembrance Day Service. Bro. John Bath was raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason.

 10th December 1992:-The Annual “Special Ladies” and Ladies Christmas Dinner was held. During a short business meeting, WBro. Glenn Sawyers was made a member by affiliation. After the meeting, the Ladies were escorted to the Lodge room, where RWBro Vic Ramsbottom explained the Duties of the Officers and touched on the function and paraphernalia.

 08th January 1993:-RWBro. Douglas Sherris, DDGM, made an unofficial visit. Bro. Roger Anderson presented a paper on the “Cabletow”. He emphasized that, although we talk about the “Cabletow length” as if it were a material distance, in Masonic terminology it is really an invisible one which is in fact a measure of a Mason’s obligation to attend his craft.

 8th April 1993:-WBro.Jack Hildebrandt presented a “Gold Honor Award” to RWBro. Rev Herman Miller, for his outstanding contribution to freemasonry. RWBro. Vic Ramsbottom gave an interesting talk on his visit “Down Under”. A copy of the “Ivory Gavels of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand” may be found in the minutes of this meeting. They tie in with the Klondyke “Gold Rush” 1897. (See Chapter IX page 116)

 Bro. Robert Hansen became a member by affiliation. RWBro. W.C. (Bill) Johnston was proposed as an “Honorary Life Member”. A written ballot unanimously approved the proposal and the RW Sir was welcomed to the Lodge.

 9th September 1993:- A memoriam was held for RWBro. Rev. Herman John Miller, born on 27th February 1910, at Aylon, Ontario, and passed to the Grand Lodge Above 31 August 1993.  RWBro. Rev. Herman J Miller had been a loyal Freemason since 1944, serving as Grand Lodge Chaplain, DDGM, and for over 20 years with dedication as Secretary/Treasurer of Carstairs Lodge No 20. He was awarded the Long Service Jewel and the honorary appellation of “Secretary Emeritus”. A cheque for Two Hundred ($ 200.00) dollars was received from Mrs. Shirley Smith, Lady of our departed WBro. Gordon Smith to establish a Memorial in the name of WBro Smith.

 14th October 1993:-Mr. Calvin Rowat received his First Degree. WBro. Doug Ramsbottom, WM, called RWBro. Vic Ramsbottom to the East to assume the gavel in his absence, as he was moving to Kelowna BC. RWBro Brian Allen, DDGM, brought greetings from the Grand Lodge and congratulated them on the excellent Degree.

 10th November 1993:- RWBro. Raymond Burton DGM, was received in form. The WM informed the brethren that WBro. Glen Sollid had resigned as Secretary/Treasurer. Due to ill health, Bro. John Hawkin could not continue as SW. WBro Jim Stephens resigned as Tyler. An election was held, WBro. Jim Stephens was elected as Secretary/Treasurer, RWBro. W.C. (Bill) Johnston was elected as SW and VWBro. Stan Pearson was elected as Tyler. The secretary was directed to request the investiture out of time. RWBro. Vic Ramsbottom conducted the Remembrance Day service in memory of those who gave their lives in the service of their country. RWBro Raymond Burton presented RWBro. Vic Ramsbottom his warrant as representative for Wisconsin.

 09th December 1993:-The Annual “Special Ladies” and Ladies Night for the Christmas Festivities was held in the lower Hall. Chief Cook and organizer, Lady Flo Ramsbottom, was assisted by many of the other Ladies. A short business meeting was conducted. The Secretary/Treasurer, SW and Tyler were invested.

RWBro. Allen, DDGM, brought greetings and gave a short talk on “For the rest of my life”.

13 January 1994:-Bro. Calvin Rowat was raised to the Third Degree in due and ancient form. A Petition for affiliation by RWBro. W.C. (Bill) Johnston (HLM) and Bro Paul Hagger, Miramichi Lodge No 18 GR NB were received. At the Festive Board, Bro. Roger Anderson surprised all with a very nice 88th Anniversary cake.

 10th February 1994:- RWBro. W.C. (Bill) Johnston and Bro. Paul Hagar became members by affiliation. Bro. Alex Palin presented a paper on the “Three Degrees in Masonry and their relationship with the Bible”, a most intriguing paper which left much to think about.

 8th September 1994:- The WM welcomed VWBro. Stan Pearson, Grand Director of Ceremonies and invited him to the East. RWBro. Vic Ramsbottom and Bro. Roger Anderson were volunteer hosts at the replica of an early Lodge in Heritage Park during the summer, and were congratulated for their efforts. A motion was passed to have some new “Visitors” sign in sheets made and presented to Heritage Park Lodge, as their supply is low. (see Chapter XIII)

 13th October 1994:- RWBro. Thomas Hargreaves, DDGM, was welcomed on his official visit.

 10th November 1994:- MWBro. Raymond Burton, Grand Master, was our special visitor and piped in by the Grand Piper, VWBro. Kenneth McTavish. Accompanying the Grand Master were seven (7) Grand Lodge Officers. A very emotional and well presented Memorial Service to the men and women during the many wars past and present was presented by RWBro. Vic Ramsbottom in which all present were invited to participate.

 8th December 1994:-Another successful “Special Ladies” and Ladies Night for Christmas festivities was held. A short business meeting was held, after which the brethren rejoined their Ladies for Coffee and Dessert.

 12th January 1995:- RWBro. Gerald Webber was our special guest and gave a historical report on the  “Prince Hall Masons” which is a non white Masonic Order formed some time near the abolition of slavery in the United States. There are at present some Lodges in Canada including Alberta. The matter will come up in the 1995 Grand Lodge communication.

09th February 1995:-Bro. Kimberley Greenizan, Ionic Lodge No 526, Grand Lodge of Canada, became a member by affiliation. Bro John Harsberg (124) gave a very thought provoking paper on “How do you stand in Masonry?”

 09 March 1995:- WBro. Robert Carver, Hinton Lodge No 178, became a member by affiliation.

 25th May 1995:-An Emergent meeting was held to confer the Third Degree for Concord Lodge No 124 on Bro. Burns and Bro. Macalvinia. RWBro. Hugh Young, JGW, was our special guest.

Bro. Alex Palin received his 50 year Jewel from RWBro. W.C. (Bill) Johnston. We also had a very special visitor from Master’s and Past Master’s Lodge No 130 Grand Lodge of New Zealand in the person of WBro Maurice Ford. (RWBro. Vic Ramsbottom is a member of this Lodge).

 14th September 1995:- Carstairs /Concord Golf trophy was won by Carstairs Lodge. Bro. Roger Anderson again took on the task of organizing shifts for Heritage Park Lodge, and reminded the brethren that it is a rewarding learning experience, meeting visitors from all over the world. He looks forward to new volunteers for 1996.

 12th October 1995:- RWBro. W.C. (Bill) Johnston reported on his Royal reception at a recent visit to a Lodge in Ireland. Grand Honors consisted of eleven (11) claps. The Altar was long and narrow (as opposed to square) and supported the working tools as well as the VSL. A paper by Bro Alex Palin was presented about the transformation of a lump of clay with no purpose until formed into a useful item. In this sense speculative masonry properly applied will transform a new candidate into a valuable member of the Lodge and leave a lasting impression on viewers of freemasonry. WBro. Al Woelk of Rockyford Lodge No 123  presented Canada Gavel No 9, a traveling Gavel from Wyong Lodge No 247, N.S.W. Australia. (see page 113 Chapter IX). It should be noted that the first time this Gavel came to Carstairs Lodge No 20 it came in a blue bag. Today you see a “Hard Case” which was made by WBro Jack Hildebrandt before it went to the next Lodge.

9th November 1995:- MWBro. Gordon Macaulay, Grand Master came to visit (his father, MWBro. V. H. Macaulay visited Carstairs Lodge in 1937). RWBro. Vic Ramsbottom conducted the annual Remembrance Day service. The ceremony was concluded by each brother present pinning a “poppy” on a symbolic white cross. Bro Alex Palin presented a paper on the book, “Born in Blood”

The closing remarks by the Grand Master were “On this Remembrance Day let us not only remember those who died to make us free, but also those who returned to make a major contribution to our freedom”.

 17th November 1995:-An Emergent meeting was held, during which WBro. Glenn Sawyers in the East conferred the First Degree on Mr. Timothy Taverner.

 14th December 1995:- The Annual Christmas dinner for our “Special Ladies and Ladies was held. Our special guest was MWBro. Raymond Burton, Grand Master, with a goodly number of Grand Lodge Officers. It was brought to the attention by the Tyler that RWBro. Donald B Russell, DDGM Dinosaur District, had attended all of WBro. Glenn Sawyers’ meetings.

 11th January 1996:- The First Degree was conferred on Mr. “ RG ” Hemlow and Mr. Tom Trinkunas. The WM, WBro. Glen Sollid gave special commendation to WBro. Glenn Sawyers for his special efforts to retain as many members as possible.

 8th February 1996:- WBro. Brooks Lamb, WM King Solomon Lodge No 41, was our special guest. A Second Degree was conferred on Brothers Tom Trinkunas, Bro Tim Taverner and Bro “RG” Hemlow. Fourteen (14) visitors representing nine (9) Lodges were present.

 11th April 1996:-Brothers Trinkunas, Taverner and Hemlow, were raised to the Third Degree in due and ancient form. It was reported that WBro. Robert Ackert, a member of Hinton Lodge No 178 and now a resident of Calgary has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He has requested that Carstairs Lodge No 20 conduct his Masonic Services. A motion was made to make WBro. Robert Ackert an Honorary member of our Lodge, subject to the approval of Grand Lodge.

 9th May 1996:- RWBro. Pi Lin Li, DDGM, made his official visit. 50 year Jewels were presented to three brethren:-

-Bro. Don Munro (son of RWBro John W Munro) by MWBro. David A Bruce.

-VWBro. Stanley G.B. Pearson, who had affiliated from Spitzie Lodge No 6, (WM and brethren from No 6 were present for the occasion) by MWBro Raymond Burton, who had appointed VWBro Stan Pearson as his Director of Ceremonies.

-WBro. Jack Won Wah, Angola Lodge No 236, Angola, Indiana, who grew up in Carstairs where his family owned a Laundry. Carstairs Lodge No 20 did a courtesy Third Degree during WWII while WBro Wah, was serving with an American Engineer Unit building the Alaska Highway. WBro Wah now lives in California. RWBro Pi Lin Li, DDGM, presented the 50 year jewel.

 21st June 1996:- WBro. Robert Frederick Ackert (23rd October 1939-10 June 1996) was laid to rest at 2:00pm at the Cochrane Cemetery. Seventeen Brethren and many family members gathered for the Masonic Service. The Lodge was opened at 12:30pm.

29th June 1996:- Concord Lodge No 124 recaptured their Golf Trophy at the Golf Tournament, McCall Lake Golf Club.

 September 1996:- A goodly number of “Special Ladies”, Ladies and Brethren attended a Lodge picnic, held at the ranch of VWBro. Stan Pearson, at Cremona Alberta. It was a very good start for the fall season.

 02 October 1996:-The WM, WBro. Kim Greenizan, RWBro. W.C. (Bill) Johnston, RWBro. Vic Ramsbottom, WBro. Jack Hildebrandt, WBro. Jim Stephens and Bro. Paul Hagger (SD) traveled to Granite Lodge No 127 and presented the Perfection Lodge No 9 Gavel.

 10th October 1996:-RWBro. Allan Sinclair, DDGM was received in form. A First Degree was emulated. Bro. Dave Roberts (Y) of Crossfield Lodge No 48 acted as the candidate.

 14th November 1996:- It was a cold evening, -20, blowing snow. The brethren had to shovel snow to get into the Masonic Hall. Many regrets were received by the WM. Visiting brethren from Perfection Lodge No 9 assisted as IPM and Tyler. The annual Remembrance Day service was conducted by RWBro. Vic Ramsbottom. The festive board celebrated the November birthdays. The cake was supplied by VWBro Stan Pearson, despite being snowed in at Cremona.

 14th December 1996:-The annual Christmas dinner for our “Special Ladies” and Ladies was another success. We were graced with the Deputy Grand Master RWBro. Hugh Young. There was a Carol contest, led by WBro. Howard Langdon. Bro Alex Palin (Santa Claus) gave out gifts. Condolences were sent to WBro. Douglas Ramsbottom who had lost his good lady to an aneurysm this week.

13 February 1997:- By special dispensation, Crescent Lodge No 87 moved their Charter for the evening to confer the First Degree on Mr. Darrell Dvorik with the assistance of the WMs of Phoenix District. MWBro. Calvin Shaver, Grand Master, was present. The Grand Master brought greetings and congratulated Phoenix District on a great evening in Masonry. Thirty-one (31) visitors representing fifteen (15) Lodges were present.

 10th April 1997:-Life Membership was granted to WBro. James R Stratton

 8th May 1997:- First Degree was conferred on Mr. Frank Eugene Hammell. The second annual Lobster Night was a great success, with profits going to the 100th Anniversary Fund.

We were also graced with a visit from the Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan, in the person of MWBro. Norman Cook PGM. Three visiting WMs and eleven (11) visitors enjoyed the evening. Bro. Roger Anderson at the 92nd Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Alberta received the Medal of Merit from MWBro Basile Costouros, Grand Master, on Saturday 14th June 1997

 11th September 1997:-A letter from the Crossfield Hall Board increasing our rent to

 $ 600.00 for ten (10) meetings. Bro. Roger Anderson thanked the Lodge for nominating him for the Masonic Medal of Merit which he received in June at the 92nd Annual Grand Lodge Communication.

 9th October 1997:- RWBro. Paul Rabel, DDGM, made a visit. Bro Frank Eugene Hamel was passed to the Second Degree.

 26th October 1997:- The laying of the “Corner Stone” was conducted at St. Thomas United Church, by the Grand Lodge of Alberta, MWBro. Hugh Young, Grand Master. Bro. Roger Anderson had contributed many months to this project and is to be commended for his actions. Other brethren taking an active part were VWBro Stan Pearson, Director of Ceremonies, WBro. Douglas Ramsbottom carried the wine and RWBro Vic Ramsbottom was the photographer.

 13th November 1997:- RWBro. Paul Rabel made his official visit with a large number of visitors. The annual Remembrance Day service was conducted by RWBro. Vic Ramsbottom. The First Degree was conferred on Mr. Shawn deNevers. The DDGM brought greetings from Grand Lodge and congratulated the Degree team and Bro. deNevers for selecting Carstairs Lodge No 20 to become a member.

 11th December 1997:- The Annual “Special Ladies” and Ladies Christmas Dinner was again celebrated with a goodly number of visitors. While the Lodge had their short business meeting RWBro Coltard gave a slide presentation to the ladies on the Grand Masters tour to Ireland and Scotland.

 12th February 1998:- This was “Worshipful Masters Night” in Phoenix District with support from Alpha District. There were forty (40) visitors representing twenty (21) Lodges. The DDGM, RWBro Paul Rabel, MWBro Robert L Costigan and MWBro Ray Burton contributed to the evening. Bro. Shawn deNevers and Bro. Frank Hamill were raised to the Third Degre
