1957-1982
14 Feb
1957:- For his act of bravery, the lodge commended Bro. Walter V. May,
who saved the life of a Water Valley man from a burning farm house. Bro
May was also hospitalized for burns received in the rescue.
13 June
1957:- Natural gas along with water and sewer were made available by the
village. Approximate cost for Gas installation $ 645.00, Water and Sewer
$ 1424.00, which did not include alterations to the building to
accommodate same. A committee of two Lodge Members, two Eastern Star and
two Maccabbees was set up to discuss the project.
All
principal officers attended the Grand Lodge Communication in Calgary and
the District No.4 Meeting in Lacombe.

February 1958:- The results of the Hall Committee decided it could not
afford the cost of modernization, and recommended that the Masonic Hall
be transferred to the village of Carstairs. A letter confirming this was
sent to the village council.
10th
April 1958:- RWBro. J.W. Rogers, DDGM made his official visit. Bro. J.P.
O’hea proved in the Second Degree and was raised to the Third Degree.
11th
September 1958:- The brethren were read a letter from the Grand Lodge of
Alberta with regards to the redistribution of District. Carstairs No. 20
would move to District No. 18. The WM stated that we would give it
“careful study”.

February 1959:-Bro. Gordon Roy Remole was granted Life Membership for
his dedication to the Lodge and Community. Bro Remole is moving to White
Rock, British Columbia.

March 1959:- RWBro H.J. West, DDGM, No 4 made his official visit. For
this occasion, Bro. Stanley Raymond Bell and Bro. Joseph Sterling were
passed to the Second Degree. The DDGM addressed the Lodge in a very
impressive manner, speaking on the duties of sponsors for new members.

April 1959:- The report from the Hall Board Committee in regards to the
transfer of Title to the Village of Carstairs was read and approved.
Bro. A. Hugh Wilson made a motion, seconded by WBro. George Shaw, that
Carstairs Lodge No. 20 A.F. & A.M., G.R.A. transfer to the Village of
Carstairs the title (free from all encumbrances) for the Masonic Hall,
situated on Lot 5 and 6, Block 29, Plan 3845, according to the articles
as shown appended hereto.

May 1959:- MWBro. Melvin McKenzie Downey has passed to the Grand Lodge
Above. The Charter to be draped for 90 Days.
10th
June 1959:- At the 54th Annual Grand Lodge communication, our
Lodge together with King Hiram No.21 was transferred from District
No.4 to District No.18. Our Lodge protested the transfer to no
avail. Our association with the other 10 Lodges in District No.4 has
always been most pleasant and having a District Meeting in a different
place each year was most enjoyable. In District No.18, we are only three
(3) country Lodges and six (6) Calgary Lodges. We realize that our
association in the new District will also be enjoyable, but we naturally
hate to more or less lose a great number of our country friends.

June 1959:- Having transferred the Masonic Hall title to the village of
Carstairs, they in return gave the Masonic Lodge ten (10) years free
rent.
10th
September 1959:- A letter from the Village of Carstairs was read asking
the Lodge to change the name of the Masonic Hall. Bro. George Wesley
Gray and Bro. Lionel Harold Borton were raised to the Third Degree.
08 October
1959:- RWBro. John Davis, DDGM District No.18, made his official visit
and welcomed Carstairs to their new district.

November 1959:- An Emergent meeting was called for the Masonic Funeral
of Bro. Oliver Garfield Goodfellow (56). Bro. Goodfellow was initiated
11th December 1952 and Passed to the Grand Lodge above, 31st October
1959. He was:-

April 1960:- RWBro. J. Davis, DDGM, made his official visit and
addressed the lodge in a fine and influential manner. Mr. Gerald John
Fenn received his First Degree.

June 1960:- Bro. Gerald John Fenn was raised to the Third Degree.
1960:-
Modernization/Renovations of Carstairs Community Hall. The estimated
cost for Water facilities - downstairs kitchen and upstairs lunch
counter - was $ 6000.00 of which $ 4500.00 was donated by the provincial
government (allocated for recreational purposes for the village of
Carstairs). The Lodge tenants were required to come up with the
remainder. Bro Laustsen donated a typewriter for Lodge use.
11th
September 1960:-Previous donations to the Wood’s Christian Home in
Calgary were discussed. WBro. D. Beckner moved, seconded by Bro A. Hugh
Wilson, that we continue to contribute one (1) Dollar per member at the
Annual Installation. The WM proposed that we contact King Hiram Lodge
No. 21 and support WBro E.A. McInnes (21) for DDGM at the district
meeting 22nd October 1960.

March 1961:-WBro D Tronnes presented a set of “lights” to the Lodge
which he had purchased on a recent trip to the USA.

March 1961:- Bro Richard M Sterling (89), initiated 29th
April 1909, passed to the Grand Lodge above.

October 1961:-RWBro E.A. McInnes, DDGM, made his official visit. Bro.
Russell Wellington Allen and Bro. Frederick Gerald Simington, having
proved in the First Degree in an excellent manner were passed to the
Second Degree. The DDGM congratulated the brethren on their work and
looked forward to their next degree and their progression through the
offices in the Lodge. RWBro. McInnes brought a thoughtful message.

September 1962:- RWBro. J.T. Clarke, DDGM, made his official visit. The
DDGM favored the Lodge with an interesting talk on various Masonic
activities. The brethren showed their appreciation with applause.

October 1962:- New Grand Lodge Constitution was approved for purchase.
The motion included that each active member be issued with the same. As
the brethren of King Hiram Lodge No 21 had to find new quarters, the
Lodge approved a motion to invite them to use our Masonic Hall until
they could find a new building.

1963-An
annual honorarium of $ 50.00 was approved for the secretary. The Hall
Board approved a contract for replacing shingles and tiling the ceiling
and painting the walls.
1963. The
Lodge had another productive year under WBro. Dr. S.R Bell. It was also
a bountiful year for the farming community. The highest yields they had
ever had.
Lodge Dues
were raised $ 5.00 to Fifteen dollars. RWBro Munro returned from a
European holiday and brought back a “Door Knocker” which he presented to
the Lodge.

February 1964:- RWBro. J.S. McKergow, DDGM, made his official visit. He
brought along with him many visitors including twelve (12) Al Azhar
Temple Chanters (Shriners).

December 1964:- This was a quiet Masonic year, but the coldest winter in
years, -30 degrees, with fifty-five (55) mile an hour winds. Community
homes had no gas for days. WBro Bell presented a rug for use in the
lodge room. The Village Council required a “Gavel” and the lodge
accommodated.

February 1965:- An Emergent meeting was held for the Masonic Funeral of
Bro. Howard Hammell. He was born at Killarney Manitoba 05 May 1896. Bro
Hammell became a member of Carstairs Lodge No 20, 24th June
1948. RWBro John W Munro spoke of Bro. Hammell as always being a
faithful member. We should also at this time remember his father WBro.
Joseph Hammell, to whom we owe much credit for having helped to retain
the Masonic Hall at a time of financial difficulties. He passed to the
Grand Lodge Above, 09 February 1965.

March 1965:- The By-Law committee presented their report which was
approved. The Secretary was directed to ensure the new approved By-Laws
were ordered.
22nd
June 1965:- RWBro. John W Munro had come back from Victoria for the
First Degree of Mr. Cameron S Johnston. WBro. Ray Wood spoke on the good
and faithful service given to Masonry over the past thirty-nine (39)
years by RWBro. John W. Munro. He is going to be sadly missed by his
move to Victoria. We wish him well.
9th
September 1965:-The WM reported that the ordered Canadian Flag
had arrived and will be displayed at the next meeting. WBro. Ray Wood is
a candidate for DDGM at the next district meeting.
14th
October 1965:-RWBro. Norman H. Lukes, DDGM, made his official visit.
Bro. C.S. Johnston was passed to the Second Degree. RWBro Lukes
commended both the candidate and the brethren taking part in the Degree
work. He went on to show and explain how Masonry and the building of
King Solomon’s Temple went hand in hand.

fine Turkey Dinner of which forty-six (46) attended, the Lodge was close
tyled with twenty-three (23) members and twenty-three (23) visitors
(representing seven (7) Lodges) of which fifteen (15) were from King
Hiram No.21.

December 1965- An Emergent Meeting was called to hold a Masonic service
for Bro. Remole. Bro. Roy Herman Remole was born 7th January
1888.in Malhus Norway. He became a member of Conquest Lodge No. 132
G.R.S, 14th October 1943, and affiliated with Carstairs Lodge
No. 20, 01 January 1944. He passed to the Grand Lodge above 13th
December 1965 in White Rock, British Columbia.

1966:- At the annual Grand Lodge Communication, RWBro Ray Wood (20), was
installed as DDGM No 18.

September 1966:- WBro Warren Rasmussen and his Officers did an excellent
job in promoting our sixtieth Year (60), The OES served a delicious meal
to fifty-five (55) brethren, after which the brethren adjourned
upstairs. The Grand Master MWBro Gordon Towers was received in form
after which the Grand Secretary RWBro Ned Rivers presented hand
crafted “gavels” to the principal officers. These had been crafted by
RWBro David Penman (91), from an old Royal Bank desk. RWBro Ray Wood
gave the report on the past sixty (60) years.
The Grand
Master presented a fine message. All those in attendance received a
special pen as a memento.

1967:- Brethren from King Hiram Lodge No 21 presented the WM with a
Traveling Square, started by Calgary Lodge No. 23 in 1947 which makes
this the twentieth (20) year of its travel. It no doubt has achieved its
aim to increase visitation between Lodges.

June 1967:- After the conferring of the first degree on Mr. Carl J
Thompson, our special guest Bro. Eldon Woolliams M.P. gave an excellent
talk on Israel and the near East.

September 1967:-. A tribute was given in honor of WBro Wilfred Bryce
Frizzel, Born 01 March 1889 at Dunns Scotland. He became a member of
Carstairs Lodge No.20, 14th February 1946. Served as
Worshipful Master in 1952. Passed To The Grand Lodge Above, 9th
June 1967.

April 1968:- The W.M. reported that the Innisfail Lodge Traveling Gavel
had been taken to King Solomon Lodge No 41 in Cochrane by the WM. The
Maccabbees were erecting a sign at the entrance of the village, and the
lodge agreed to be part of this project.

September 1968:- An Emergent meeting was called for the Masonic Funeral
of Bro Paul Christian Laustsen, who suffered a sudden heart attack. Born
at Vejle, Denmark, 01 October 1904, he became a member of Carstairs
Lodge No 20, 11th February 1954. He passed to the Grand Lodge
Above, 8th September 1968.

October 1968:- RWBro Fawcett, DDGM, made his official visit. His message
was very interesting and concerned the gravity of difficulty the
Brethren face when they are about to make a suspension. “Try to
prevent it”.

1969:- This was an Irish Night, WBro Dr J Hamilton Keys was the guest of
honor and with the DDGM acting as the candidate, exemplified the Second
Degree under the Irish Constitution. Irish celebrations continued in the
lower hall after the Degree.

April 1969:- The Masonic Education for the evening informed the brethren
on the old custom of having Masonic emblems on “Bridles” and other gear
of horses ridden by brethren.

May 1969:- The ten (10) year lease being up, the hall board extension
was approved for the second Thursday of each month. A one-hundred ($
100.00) dollar donation was made to the Hall Board for services received
over the past ten (10) years.

April 1970:-A Masonic funeral for Bro George Albin Wahl, Berry Creek
Lodge No 158 was requested by his family, now residents of Carstairs. In
order for the large Masonic group expected to attend, an Emergent
meeting was called by Carstairs Lodge No 20. Besides a large number of
Carstairs members, brethren representing, Berry Creek Lodge No 158,
Hanna Lodge No 78, Edgerton Lodge No 102, Hand Hill Lodge No 98,
Whitecourt Lodge No 153, and other lodges in the area. WBro K.V.
Solberg (158) gave a very interesting Eulogy on the life of Bro Wahl,
passed to the Grand Lodge Above, 19th April 1970.

June 1970:- A Degree team from King George Lodge No 59 conferred the
Third Degree on Bro John Armond Bennett.
8th
October 1970:- RWBro Robert William Maxwell, DDGM, made his official
visit. The lodge was given an explanation why we took over the burial
ceremony for Mr. Reginald R Haag. He had fallen on hard times and was
suspended for NPD. WBro Reginald R Haag was WM in 1939 and deserved the
respect of the lodge.

November 1970:-Honorarium for secretary was increased to One
Hundred dollars
($ 100.00)

January 1971:- An Emergent meeting was called for the Masonic funeral of
WBro A E Macdonald. Bro Macdonald was our senior statesman, and had been
Tyler and Janitor, for years. He always set up the Lodge and festive
board. The Lodge decreed that the charter would be draped for sixty
(60) days in his memory.
26 March
1971:-An Emergent meeting was called to conduct a Masonic Funeral for
Bro Charles Edgar Reid. He was born 29th November 1889 at
Baldur, Manitoba, and became a member by initiation, 14th
February 1952. He passed to the Grand Lodge Above, 23rd March
1971.

October 1971:-This was a black month in the life of Carstairs Lodge No
20. A motion was put forth to ask the Grand Secretary to attend our next
meeting to discuss surrendering our Charter, due to lack of attendance
and candidates.
9th
September 1971:- RWBro. E. Cameron, DDGM, made his official visit. He
spoke on the “Seven Liberal Arts and Science”, which was well received.
He also reminded the brethren of the Grand Masters slogan for this year,
“Plan for Progress”.
11th
November 1971:- MWBro J S Wood, Grand Master, arrived with six (6) of
his Grand Lodge Officers to discuss the surrendering of the Charter of
Carstairs Lodge No 20. At the request of the GM, the Lodge was “Called
Off” to discuss their options. Lodge then resumed. WBro Norman Horning,
made a motion, seconded by RWBro J S Wood, that a dispensation be
requested from Grand Lodge of Alberta to elect the Officers in May with
installation in June. It was agreed that the present officers would
carry on until June of 1972. The GM gave verbal approval, which would be
confirmed in writing later. There were three visiting brethren, WBro
Herman Miller, Bro Metro Gushaty and Bro Jack Hildebrandt, who would
eventually play a vital role in the revival of Carstairs Lodge No 20.
22nd
November 1971:-An Emergent Meeting was called to conduct a Masonic
Funeral for WBro. Elmer Weldrick Darling, who passed to the Grand Lodge
Above 19th November 1971. The WM directed the Charter be
draped for thirty (30) days.
13 January
1972:- An Emergent Meeting was called to conduct a Masonic Funeral for
Bro Charles Lout Pearson, who passed to the Grand Lodge Above, 10th
January 1972. WM ordered Charter draped for Thirty (30) days.
9th
March 1972:- A First Degree was conferred on Dr. Peter Prabhahar Athley.
28th
April 1972:-A District Church Parade was hosted by the lodge, which was
well attended.
11th
May 1972:- WBro. Rev Herman Miller became a member by affiliation.

20 June
1972:-An Emergent meeting was called for the installation of Officers as
approved by Grand Lodge. After fifteen years of installations by
RWBro E.A. McInnes, (21) the torch was passed to VWBro Herman
Miller, who was the Installing Officer. He had just been invested at the
Sixty-Seventh Annual Communication of Grand Lodge of Alberta as Grand
Chaplain.

October 1972:- The By-Laws were changed to reflect the Election of
Officers in May and the installation of Officers in June. Initiation
would be fifty ($50.00) dollars, Affiliation Ten ($10) Dollars with
Annual Dues at Fifteen ($15.00) Dollars.

March 1973:-The Masonic Community came together in support of the
Testimonial Dinner for RWBro. Edward Hewitt Rivers, Grand Secretary.
Eighty-five (85) visitors were present, representing nineteen (19)
Lodges for the banquet and meeting. The Grand Master, MWBro. F.G. (Glen)
Fox, along with visiting Past Masters, assisted in the First Degree of
Mr. Donald Dahl. RWBro. David A Bruce (87) was A/JD. The following
brethren assisted in the degree:-

October 1973:-Special Meeting conducted by Mosaic Lodge No 176, bringing
their Charter out, and conferred the Master Mason Degree (the Ancient
York Rite) on Bro R Lowther (176) and Bro Nick Chrapko (176). There were
sixty-five (65) visitors and members, representing nine (9) Lodges, with
twenty-eight (28) members from Mosaic Lodge No.176.
June
1974:- At the 69th Annual Communication, RWBro Herman Miller
was installed as DDGM of District 18.

January 1975:- A special 50th anniversary night was held for
RWBro Ray Wilbur Wood. He was born 8th November 1892 at Munro
City, Missouri, and became a member of Carstairs Lodge No. 20, 15th
May 1924. A long time friend of the Wood family, MWBro. Gordon
Sterling, Grand Master, was present as were twenty-three (23) other
visitors representing nine (9) Lodges. On behalf of the Lodge, his son
RWBro. Wilbur Wood (173) presented his father RWBro Ray Wood with his
Masonic ring (engraved 1924-1974) in recognition of his fifty (50) years
devoted service to the craft. The Grand Master presented a hand engraved
scroll with appropriate words to this dedicated mason. He had a long
association with the “Woods” family and held them in very high regard.
Bro. Herman Roedler spoke of his long association and brought greetings
and congratulations from the community and the Village of Carstairs.

His message was the Masonic words, terms, and their reference in our
allegiance to the Most High.

RWBro. William Margach, made presentations to thirteen brethren present.

twelve (12) year secretary Jewel from RWBro Ray Wood.

March 1976:- Step-Up Night. From the East Bro Jack Hildebrandt (SW)
called RWBro. Ray Wood and RWBro. Rev Herman Miller to the Altar. On
behalf of the Calgary Brethren - WBro Metro Gushaty, Bro Jack
Hildebrandt, Bro William Matheson, Bro Fred Wooffitt and Bro John
Moore-, a new Volume of the Sacred Law was presented. The Second Degree
was then conferred on Bro. Robert Peter Maron.

April 1976:- WBro Duncan MacFarquhar proposes we support the 4H Club in
our area and donate a trophy for “Showmanship”.

William Margach must have had an affinity for our Lodge, as in 1975 he
proclaimed the Officers duly installed and invested, and now for WBro
J.C. (Jack) Hildebrandt he performed his last act as DDGM proclaiming
the officers duly installed and invested for 1976-1977.

November 1976:-
MWBro A.O. (Tony) Aspeslet, Grand Master, on his official visit, led a
delegation of Masons to our Lodge. This being our 70th
Anniversary a “Fellowship Hour” was convened. At 7:00PM the brethren sat
down to a beef dinner prepared by the OES, with the assistance of WBro
Duncan MacFarquhar, WBro Metro Gushaty and Bro John Moore. WBro Jack
Hildebrandt, WM, received the Grand Master and his party in form after
the dinner. There were visitors representing 26 Lodges. Bro A Fergstad
and Bro A O’Brien, proved up in the Third Degree.
Bro Herman
Roedler, a member for forty-six (46) years) serving the community for
many years as Councilor, Reeve, etcetera, received his Life Membership
from the Grand Master. RWBro Herman Miller gave the historical report.

April 1977:- A By-Law change had been approved as follows:- Initiation
fee increased to $ 100.00 and Affiliation to $ 20.00.

November 1977:- MWBro K.L. Crockett, Grand Master, laid the “Corner
Stone” for the new Masonic Hall in Medicine Hat.

June 1978:-Visitors from Hythe Lodge No 157, WBro V Johnston (secretary)
and Bro Harris, along with RWBro Clarkson and VWBro Kujack, Grande
Prairie Lodge No 105, presented the “Traveling Square” (Calgary Lodge No
23) and outlined the history.

Installation, a banquet followed with the Ladies.

October 1978:-The WM along with a goodly number of members traveled to
Cyprus Hills Lodge No 113, Three Hills and presented the “Traveling
Square” (Calgary Lodge No 23)

October 1978:- WBro Metro Gushaty presented the final draft of the “Life
Membership Plan” which would be sent to the Grand Lodge for approval.
A very
impressive Memorial Service was conducted by the WM and his Officer for
two of our very dedicated brethren. RWBro John William Munro was born at
Glasgow Scotland 27th October 1890. He was a Life Member of
Mother Kilwinning Lodge No 0, Glasgow Scotland, affiliated with
Carstairs Lodge No 20, 27th May 1926, elected as WM for 1932
and 1940, and served as DDGM, District No 18, 1947-1948. He passed to
the Grand Lodge Above 24th September 1978.

Gerald John Fenn was born at Godstone, Surrey England, 16th
December 1915. He and his family came from England and settled in Water
Valley. He became a member of Carstairs Lodge No 20, 14th
April 1960, elected WM for 1968 and 1970. He passed to the Grand Lodge
above 28th September 1978 at Campbell River BC where private
services were held on 30th September 1978.

November 1978:- VWBro F. W. Keyte’s WM Apron was presented to the WM by
WBro Metro Gushaty, to be worn by all future Worshipful Masters in
memory of VWBro Keyte. His last lecture in this lodge was delivering the
First Degree Working Tools to WBro Jack Hildebrandt at his
installation...

1979:- MWBro Robert L Costigan, Grand Master, made his official visit
and was received in form. He referred to the Paid Up Life Membership
Plan that we are pioneering, and gave an interesting and instructive
paper on “Is Masonry relevant to today?”
